of Instruction:
Just as the speaker and listener
must work together to make communication possible, the teacher and student
must work together to make learning possible; if either is defective,
the other is diminished. Accordingly, the teacher must strive to engage
and challenge students; to help students find and maintain pace for
mastering the material; to critique and stimulate; and to offer interest
and encouragement. In turn, the student must be active in the learning
process; it is the student’s responsibility to suspend judgments
and be ready, willing, and prepared to learn, keeping in mind that learning
involves change and change may be uncomfortable. Thus, the teacher and
student must work in concert, supporting one another in the learning
process. When either does not work to his or her full potential, the
other cannot fully flourish.
